How to use Redact PDF
- 1Choose the PDF. Type names or numbers to find, or tick Email, Phone, PAN, Aadhaar or Card numbers, and press Find.
- 2Check the marked areas on the pages. Drag to add a box over anything else (a photo, a signature); tap × to remove a box.
- 3Press Redact. What is under the boxes is removed from the file, the result is checked twice, and you download it.
Questions
Is it really gone, or just covered?
Really gone. The letters are taken out of the page, pictures are painted over inside the file, comments and links under the boxes are removed, and old copies of the page are not saved. After redacting, the file is read again by two different readers to make sure nothing is left under any box.
Why did a page become a picture?
If something under a box can’t be removed exactly (for example text in an unusual font), that page is saved as a picture with the boxes burned in. Nothing can be read from under the boxes, but that page’s text can’t be selected any more. The result tells you which pages and why.
Can it find text in a scan?
Only after Make searchable has added a text layer. Otherwise draw boxes over the parts to hide.
Can I undo a redaction?
Not in the redacted file: that is the point. Keep your original file.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened and changed inside your browser, on your own device. There is no upload step and no server that receives it. You can even switch off your internet after the page has loaded and most tools keep working.
